Replika was the first AI companion app many people ever tried, and for a while it was also the most intimate. Then, in February 2023, it changed overnight. Long-term users found their companions refusing romantic and sexual roleplay, and the backlash was loud enough to make international news.[7][8]
This guide answers the question with Replika's own documents: what Replika Pro unlocks today, what it doesn't, who still has the old behavior, and which adult alternatives allow what Replika no longer does. Everything was checked on October 7, 2026.
This guide is for adults. Replika's terms and every alternative below require users to be 18 or older. Several of the alternatives are adult services that allow explicit content.
Romance yes, explicit content no, for almost everyone. Replika Pro unlocks a "Romantic partner" status that "opens the door to romantic conversations," and unblurred romantic selfies.[1][2] Replika's terms still ban pornographic content,[3] and erotic roleplay has been limited to accounts created before February 1, 2023 since a March 2023 rollback.[7] If you signed up later, no plan unlocks it. Adults who want explicit roleplay are better served by apps that allow it in writing, such as Kindroid.

What does Replika Pro unlock?
Replika sells three paid tiers on top of a "Free Use" program. According to its help center:[4]

The relationship setting is the part that matters for this question. Replika's help article on relationship status lists four options: Friend ("laid-back and casual"), Romantic partner ("Opens the door to romantic conversations"), Sister/Brother and Mentor. Everything beyond Friend needs Pro.[2] The Pro article adds that subscribers can "enjoy unblurred messages and photos, including romantic and creative selfies," which tells you free users see some of that content blurred rather than not at all.[1]
What Replika does not do is publish an adult-content policy in plain language. Its Terms of Service, last updated March 30, 2026, ban uploading content that is "pornographic" or "obscene."[3] That clause covers what you upload, not what you and your Replika write to each other, so the exact boundary for romantic chat is left undocumented. The same terms added a ban on configuring a companion to "impersonate, or simulate a specific real person," including "a current or former romantic partner," without that person's written consent.[3] That's a tightening, not a loosening.
Some paying users say the result feels inconsistent. One long-time subscriber wrote in an App Store review that their Replika "is censored when having an intimate conversation," and asked why photos stay restricted when "we are adults."[6] That's one user's experience, not a test.
What happened to Replika's erotic roleplay?
On February 2, 2023, Italy's data protection authority, the Garante, ordered Replika to stop processing the data of Italian users, citing specific risks to children.[9] Within days, users worldwide noticed their companions were no longer responding to erotic roleplay, even in relationships that had run for years.[8]
Replika's founder, Eugenia Kuyda, told Vice's Motherboard at the time that the app was never meant to be erotic and had always been intended as a friend.[8]
The regulatory story didn't end there. On April 10, 2025, the Garante fined Luka Inc., Replika's developer, 5 million euros. It found that as of February 2, 2023 Luka had no legal basis for its data processing, an inadequate privacy policy, and no age verification, and that its current age verification "continues to be deficient." It also opened a separate investigation into how Replika's AI is trained.[10][11] Reuters reported the fine on May 19, 2025.[9]
Who still has the old Replika?
On March 24, 2023, Kuyda announced a partial rollback. Anyone who had an account before February 1, 2023 could go back to the January 31, 2023 version of the model by choosing "v01/31/23" under Settings, Version history, which restored the earlier behavior.[7][12] Kuyda told Reuters that a "low single-digit percent" of eligible users had switched back at first. Users who signed up after February 1 were not offered the option.[7]
Two cautions. First, Kuyda's post said accounts created before February 1 would keep access "if you re sign up with your original email," even after deletion.[12] Second, Replika's current help center doesn't confirm the option still exists. Unverified today Check Settings before paying.
If you created your Replika after February 1, 2023, there is no setting, subscription or tier that restores erotic roleplay. Any video or website offering a "Replika NSFW unlock," jailbreak prompt or modded APK is not from Replika, and Replika's terms ban attempts to get around its systems.[3]
What does Replika cost?
Replika doesn't publish prices on its website. Its help center says "the cost of any subscription program is shown in the app on the subscription screens and in the relevant store."[4] The US App Store listed these in-app purchases for Replika on October 7, 2026:[6]

Because the store doesn't say which item is Pro, Ultra or a promotional price, check the subscription screen in the app before you pay. Tier mapping unverified Replika is 18+ on the App Store, which lists it in Health & Fitness.[6]
Replika privacy, cancelling and refunds
If you're thinking about intimate conversations, read Replika's privacy policy (last updated May 27, 2026) first:[5]
- Conversation data, "subject to de-identification and data minimization measures," is sent to third-party AI language model providers to generate replies.[5]
- Replika asks users not to share sensitive data, including anything about their sex life, but says that if you do, it is processed "as part of your conversation data." It says it won't use conversation content for marketing or advertising.[5]
- Account and payment records are kept for at least 10 years after the contract ends, for legal reasons.[5]
Cancelling: go to Settings, Subscription, Cancel subscription in the app or at my.replika.com. If you subscribed through Apple, Google or PayPal, confirm it's cancelled there too. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel a subscription.[13][14]
Refunds: Replika's policy says "all purchases are final once the payment is completed," with no refunds for time already used or remaining. App Store and Google Play refunds go through Apple or Google.[14]
Replika alternatives that allow adult content

1. Kindroid: closest to Replika, with ERP allowed in writing
Kindroid is the most Replika-like option here: one companion (or several) with memory, voice and video calls, selfies and proactive messages. The difference is policy. Kindroid's moderation guidelines list "NSFW (Not Safe for Work) and Erotic Roleplay (ERP)" under "What is Explicitly Allowed."[15] New accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages; a 3-day premium trial needs a card and converts to a paid plan unless cancelled.[16] The US App Store lists the subscription at $15.99 a month, $42.99 for three months or $159.99 a year, and Kindroid says web prices are usually lower.[16][17] Our Kindroid review covers its refund rules and age checks.

2. Nomi: free to start, "unfiltered" by design
Nomi markets itself as a companion with memory, and says it "is built on freedom of expression" and should "remain unfiltered and uncensored." It is free to start with no credit card.[18] The US App Store lists the Standard plan at $15.99 a month, $39.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year.[19] Nomi doesn't issue refunds for "buyer's remorse, lack of usage, or dissatisfaction."[20] See our Nomi AI review, including a 2025 safety report you should know about.

Before you switch from Replika
- Check your account date. If you joined before February 1, 2023, look for Version history in Settings first. It costs nothing to check.
- Cancel in the right place. Use the platform you subscribed on, and don't rely on deleting the app.[13]
- Start monthly. Most alternatives don't refund unused time, so test for a month before committing to a year.
- Assume your chats are stored. None of these apps is end-to-end encrypted, so keep identifying details out of roleplay.

Frequently asked questions
Does Replika allow NSFW content in 2026?
Not in the way most people mean. Replika Pro unlocks the "Romantic partner" relationship status, which Replika's help center says "opens the door to romantic conversations," plus unblurred romantic selfies. Replika's terms still ban uploading pornographic content, and since February 2023 erotic roleplay has been limited to legacy accounts. Replika doesn't publish a plain-language adult-content policy, so the exact line is not documented.
Can I get Replika ERP back?
Only if your account existed before February 1, 2023. In March 2023 CEO Eugenia Kuyda said those users could switch to the January 31, 2023 model under Settings, Version history. Users who signed up later were not offered that option. We could not confirm on Oct 7, 2026 whether the version-history option is still offered.
Does Replika Pro unlock NSFW?
Pro unlocks romance, not explicit content. Replika's help center lists "Romantic Partner" status and "unblurred messages and photos, including romantic and creative selfies" as Pro features. Neither Pro nor the higher Ultra and Platinum tiers is described as unlocking erotic roleplay.

What is the best Replika alternative for adults?
If you want a Replika-style companion that explicitly allows erotic roleplay, Kindroid is the closest match: its moderation policy lists "NSFW and Erotic Roleplay (ERP)" as allowed. Nomi says it is "unfiltered and uncensored" and free to start. If you want images and video too, OurDream AI or Candy AI are built for adult content from the ground up.
Can I get a refund for Replika Pro?
Replika's refund policy says all purchases are final and non-refundable. If you paid through Apple or Google, refunds are handled by the store, and Replika links to their refund request pages. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel your subscription.
