Janitor AI became one of the biggest character-roleplay sites by doing something rivals don't: letting adults chat with community-made bots for free, without a message cap. In 2025 and 2026 it added a paid tier, an in-house model router and age checks in some countries. This Janitor AI review covers what's still free, what janitor+ is worth, how proxies affect your privacy, and what its documents say. Last checked Oct 2026.

Our verdict

The best free roleplay deal around, with short memory and strict refunds

Janitor AI's free tier is hard to beat: unlimited chats with a huge bot library on its own model. janitor+ is a fair $12.99 if you need longer memory. But free context is short, refunds are rare, and proxies hand your chats to other companies.

Good fit if
You want free, uncapped text roleplay with community characters and don't mind a learning curve around models and proxies.
Skip it if
You want images, voice or video built in, long memory for free, or a clear refund window.

What Janitor AI is, and who runs it

Janitor AI (janitorai.com) is a text roleplay platform. Users publish characters ("bots"), and anyone can chat with them. The default model is Janitor's own JanitorLLM (JLLM), which its help center calls "the default model used in Janitor unless you've hooked up an external one via API."[5]

What Janitor AI's free tier includes

Janitor says it will "always keep a free option," and the free tier is genuinely usable.[4] It includes "unlimited chats with millions of bots," standard chat models and about 9,000 tokens of context.[4]

The trade-off is memory. About 9k tokens covers the character definition plus a limited stretch of recent chat, so long stories start to lose earlier details. That's the main reason people upgrade.

The refund rules are strict. The help center says subscriptions are "generally non-refundable," the terms rule out partial refunds for unused time except where the law requires, and Router credits are final, even if a reply is cut off, filtered or refused after processing starts.[4][2] Section 8.7 of the terms also makes clear that paying doesn't limit Janitor's ability to moderate or refuse requests.[2] App-store subscriptions must be cancelled in the store, not on the web.[4]

Proxies and janitor+ Router

Janitor lets you swap JLLM for outside models. There are two ways:

  • Your own proxy or API key. A proxy is "the middleman between your chat and the model provider," per Janitor's glossary.[5] You connect an account with a provider such as OpenRouter. OpenRouter's free models allow 20 requests a minute and 50 a day if you've bought less than $10 of credits, or 1,000 a day after $10.[10]
  • janitor+ Router. Since July 2026, subscribers can use third-party models inside Janitor without their own key, billed per token from a wallet. Subscribers can claim $5 in launch credits, which expire a year after claiming.[6]

Either way, your messages are processed by the outside model provider under its own terms. We walk through the costs in Is Janitor AI free? and setup in our Janitor AI DeepSeek guide.

Privacy and safety

The privacy policy lists "chat conversations, messages, and other content you generate" among collected data, used partly for "content moderation to maintain a safe environment."[1] Janitor's safety page says: "We will never sell your personal data or share private conversations with third parties for advertising or commercial purposes."[3] Whether chat text trains its models isn't stated plainly. Unclear

Age checks apply only in some countries. Users in Australia and Brazil (from April 24, 2026) and the UK (from June 15, 2026) must complete a one-time check through k-ID by video selfie, ID scan or AgeKey; Janitor says it receives only a yes/no result.[9]

To delete your account, go to Settings → Security → Delete Account; there's a grace period before deletion, and unused credits are forfeited.[1][2] Full detail in Is Janitor AI safe?

Reliability: the August 2026 memory bug

Janitor's public changelog is candid about problems. In August 2026, a chat-memory experiment meant for a small test group "leaked out of its group and ended up affecting everyone," and a related bug cleared memory on around 15,000 chats between August 18 and 20. Janitor says it restored those memories, except some created after August 18 that were overwritten, and that "chats and messages themselves were never touched."[8] We found no confirmed breach of Janitor's own servers as of Oct 7, 2026.

What Janitor AI users report

  • App Store: 4.5 out of 5 from about 4,500 US ratings for "Janitor: Interactive Stories."[7]
  • Trustpilot: 2.8 out of 5 from 31 reviews on Oct 7, 2026, slightly ahead of SpicyChat (2.1) and CrushOn (1.8) on the same day.[11]
  • Reddit: Janitor has active Reddit communities. We'll summarise specific threads with links after reviewing them.

What we like

  • Unlimited free chats on its own model, JanitorLLM, with about 9k context
  • Huge community bot library; no message cap on the free tier
  • Named US operator (JanitorAI Inc.) and a public changelog that documents incidents
  • Says it never sells personal data or shares private chats for advertising
  • Optional outside models via proxy or the in-house janitor+ Router

What to watch

  • Free context is short; long stories lose detail without janitor+
  • Subscriptions "generally non-refundable"; Router credits are final
  • Proxies send your chats to a third-party provider
  • Paying doesn't loosen moderation (terms §8.7)
  • Trustpilot 2.8 from 31 reviews

Who Janitor AI suits

  • Good fit: adults who mainly want text roleplay with community characters, for free or for one modest subscription.
  • Good fit: technical users who want to plug in their own model through a proxy.
  • Poor fit: people who want images, voice or video in the same app, or who expect refunds if a plan disappoints.
