Janitor AI is one of the most popular places for character roleplay: free chat with its own model, millions of community bots, and adult content allowed on bots tagged "Limitless." It says it has more than 15 million users.[1] So why look for Janitor AI alternatives? Usually for things Janitor doesn't do: image and video generation, voice, longer memory without setting up a proxy, or an app that doesn't hide NSFW by default.
This guide compares six 18+ apps that do those things, on price, free access, in-app currency and refund rules. Every price was checked on the vendor's own pages on October 7, 2026. Where we couldn't confirm one, we say so.

Why people look for sites like Janitor AI
It's text-first, for now
Janitor AI is a chat interface for text roleplay. When it launched its first subscription in June 2026, it said plans for "other modalities (think voice and image)" were still in the works.[4] Character avatars also can't show explicit nudity or "overtly sexual imagery," under its terms.[2] If you want to see or hear your character, you need another app.
Free memory is short, and bigger models need setup
The free tier uses Janitor's own model, JLLM, with "a context limit of around 9k tokens."[5] Janitor's help center says roughly 1,000 tokens equals 750 words,[6] so long stories start forgetting early events. To use bigger models you either connect an outside provider through a proxy with your own API key[7] or pay for janitor+, which adds 5× more context and a pay-per-token "Router" for third-party models.[8][9]
The mobile app hides NSFW by default
To meet App Store and Google Play rules, Janitor's app starts in a "Safe Mode": NSFW bots don't appear in search, the model is tuned to safe-for-work replies, and some explicit words are blocked. You can switch it off with a setting on the website.[10]
Age checks in some countries, and the occasional outage
Since 2026, users connecting from Australia, Brazil and the UK must complete a one-time age check through k-ID (facial age estimation, ID scan or AgeKey), which Janitor says is a legal requirement.[11] And "is Janitor AI down" is searched more than 12,000 times a month in the US. Its status page showed 99.927% backend uptime over the 45 days before October 7, 2026.[12]
Janitor AI: is it free, is it safe, does it read your chats?
Is Janitor AI free?
Yes. The free tier includes "unlimited chats with millions of bots," standard models and about 9k tokens of context, and Janitor says "we will always keep a free option."[5] janitor+ costs $12.99 a month, or $99 a year on the web (shown as $8.25 a month, "Save 36%"), plus tax. It renews automatically.[8] Subscriptions are "generally non-refundable" except where the terms or law require.[5] Using a proxy model may cost money at the provider: Janitor's own quick-start guide (August 2025) describes OpenRouter's free tier as 50 messages a day.[7]
Is Janitor AI safe?
It's run by JanitorAI Inc., which its terms name as the data controller, with Delaware law governing and binding AAA arbitration for disputes.[2] Payments are processed by Stripe (Janitor says it doesn't see or store card details)[5] and by affiliates including Dulova Investments Limited in Nicosia, Cyprus.[3] The privacy policy says it doesn't sell personal data under California law, but also that no system is "completely secure."[3] Its help center admits chats "can be lost during server migrations" and can't always be restored.[13]
Does Janitor AI read your chats?
Janitor's privacy policy lists "chat conversations, messages, and other content you generate" as data it collects, and lists "content moderation to maintain a safe environment" among its uses.[3] Its terms say it uses "a combination of automated tools and human review" to find illegal content, and that "human reviewers assess content that is flagged to us by users."[2] We found no statement that staff routinely read private chats, and none promising they never can. If you use a proxy, your messages are also processed by the outside model provider under its own terms.
How to delete your Janitor AI account
Go to Settings → Security, scroll to the bottom, click Delete account, and enter the 6-digit code sent to your email. Support "cannot manually delete accounts," and you need access to the account email to finish.[14] If you have janitor+, cancel it first in Settings → Billing → Manage Subscription (or in the App Store or Google Play if you subscribed there).[5]

The catch: Joi's terms say romantic, erotic or sexually explicit messages, visual content and adult scenarios use a separate currency, Neurons, and "one romantic message costs 4 neurons to be read."[19]
Joi doesn't publish prices; its terms say they "may vary based on region, length of subscription" and promotions. Unverified Refunds are limited to card fraud, one-time mistaken purchases (in full if the Neurons are unspent) and accounts Joi terminates. If you file a chargeback, Joi says it may disclose your private chats to prove the charge was valid.[20] It's run by Novi Limited in Nicosia, Cyprus.[19]

Read the exit rules first. DarLink's refund policy says cancellation "takes effect once our customer support team receives your written cancellation notice," with no refunds for the current period or change of mind.[22] It's run by FameLink SA in Jura, Switzerland. It's less suited to deep roleplay with community bots than Janitor; it's built around companions you create or pick. Tokens are the limit: 100 a month doesn't go far on media, and top-up prices aren't public. Before you switch: a checklist
- Cancel janitor+ in the right place. On the web: Settings → Billing → Manage Subscription. If you subscribed in the app, cancel in the App Store or Google Play; app subscriptions "cannot be canceled from the web."[5]
- Copy your bots and personas. Save the character definitions and personas you wrote before deleting anything. Deletion is permanent.[14]
- Revoke proxy keys you no longer need at your model provider.
