Character.AI is still free, still unlimited, and still the biggest name in AI roleplay. It is also, by its own rules, not a place for adult content, and it never will be. Its help center has said since 2023 that its stance on the NSFW filter is "final."[3] Since late 2025 it has also been checking ages, sometimes with a selfie.[5]
This guide is for adults who want what Character.AI won't offer. We compare the best Character AI alternatives for 18+ users on what actually differs: price, free access, how the in-app currency works, and what happens when you want your money back. Every price was checked on the vendor's own pages on October 7, 2026. Where we couldn't confirm one, we say so.

Why adults look for Character.AI alternatives
Does Character AI allow NSFW? No, and the filter isn't going anywhere
Character.AI's Community Guidelines list "pornographic content, and nudity" as prohibited, and say its models "are designed with filters and limits to prevent inappropriate outputs."[1] Its Terms of Service separately ban content that "is obscene or pornographic."[2] A 2023 help-center article is blunter still: Character.AI "does not and will not support" pornographic use, and requesting that the filter be removed "will result in a ban."[3]
Questions like "character ai nsfw filter removed" and "does character ai still have a filter" are searched more than 2,000 times a month in the US combined. As of October 7, 2026 the answer is the same: we found no official announcement removing the filter, and the current guidelines still prohibit adult content.[1]
Why Character.AI asks you to verify your age
On October 29, 2025, Character.AI announced it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18, with chat time limited to two hours a day in the meantime. It also said it would roll out age assurance using an in-house model combined with third-party tools, including Persona.[4] On November 21, 2025 it confirmed that removal would begin on November 24, 2025 in the US, with other markets following, and that teen chat had already been cut to one hour a day.[6]
Here's what that means for adult users. Character.AI runs age assurance on every account, using signals like login info and activity on the platform. If it decides you may be under 18, you can verify with a selfie checked by Persona. An ID is requested only if the selfie isn't conclusive, and Character.AI says it never sees the ID.[5] That's the "camera scan" many users ask about. Verifying gets you back to the adult experience. It does not unlock adult content, which stays banned for everyone.
What Character.AI costs
Character.AI says it will keep offering "free and unlimited messaging for ALL users."[7] The paid tier, c.ai+, costs $9.99 a month as standard[8] or $94.99 a year (shown against a struck-through $119.88).[9] A lighter tier, (c.ai) lite, starts at $4.99 a month.[10] c.ai+ speeds up replies and skips waiting rooms, and Character.AI says Characters' output is the same for paying and free users.[7] It doesn't change the content rules. So if adult roleplay is what you want, paying Character.AI won't get it, and every app below costs money to do it properly.

OurDream publishes what every feature costs. Subscriber chat is free, standard images cost 10 coins per 2, voice calls 50 a minute, and video 100 per 5 seconds.[13] Refunds are strict: none once more than 25% of a purchase is used, and crypto payments are final.[14] It's run by Dream Studio USA, Inc. of Delaware. Its 12-month plan costs $47.88, less than c.ai+'s $94.99 annual price, and includes unlimited messages, 100 tokens a month and 18+ image and video generation.[15] It's run by EverAI Limited in Malta, and charges show as "EverAI."[15]

Every tier lists NSFW, image generation at 2 tokens and video at 20 tokens. Memory improves by tier, from "Basic" to "Living memory" on Ultimate.[17] The page also offers quarterly ("SAVE 15%") and yearly ("SAVE 44%") billing. On yearly billing the three plans come to $9.99, $18.99 and $32.99 a month ($119.88, $227.88 and $395.88 a year).[17] By our arithmetic that saves 23% to 34%, not 44%. It's run by FameLink SA (CHE-443.347.069) in Jura, Switzerland.[18] Read the cancellation rules before you pay. DarLink's refund policy says cancellation "takes effect once our customer support team receives your written cancellation notice." It also says there are no refunds for the current period's fees or tokens, used or not, when you cancel voluntarily.[19] Its terms mention a free/basic tier you can downgrade to, but the plan page doesn't say what it includes.[18]

You can sign up free, create characters and try basic chat and generation. Premium adds NSFW mode, voice messages, image and video generation, publishing and 600 chips a month. Creative PRO adds 3,000 chips a month, advanced chat memory, watermark-free downloads and a 30% referral share (15% on Premium).[20] It's run by Warmtech Ltd in Limassol, Cyprus.[21]
Lovescape's subscription page listed Premium at $95.88 a year ($7.99 a month on a 12-month plan) on its subscription page on October 7, 2026, up from the $71.88 its February 2026 blog quoted. Creative PRO is $359.88 a year; the blog listed chip packs from $9.99 for 500.[20]
Lovescape's help center says you can pay by card or crypto, that payments show with "neutral descriptions" on bank statements, and that you can cancel any time in account settings, keeping access to the end of the period.[22]

6. Joi AI: best for ready-made characters

Joi's terms say romantic, erotic or sexually explicit messages, visual content and adult scenarios run on a separate currency, Neurons, and that "one romantic message costs 4 neurons to be read."[23] Premium alone doesn't make adult chat unlimited.
Joi doesn't publish its prices. Its terms say Premium and Neuron prices "may vary based on region, length of subscription" and promotions. Unverified You can cancel in Settings → My Subscriptions, but Neurons used or unused in the current month aren't refunded. Refunds are limited to card fraud, one-time mistaken purchases (in full if the Neurons are unspent) and accounts Joi terminates itself.[24] One more clause to note: if you file a chargeback, Joi says it may disclose your private chats to prove the charge was valid.[24] It's run by Novi Limited in Nicosia, Cyprus.[23]

It's run by NextDay AI Incorporated of Montreal, with US and Cyprus entities listed.[25] Its plan page offers 20 free messages, the most of any app here, and paid tiers of 5,000 messages, 20,000 messages or unlimited messages a month.[25]
GirlfriendGPT shows live prices only after sign-in. Its homepage FAQ still lists $5, $10 and $35 monthly plans,[25] which may be out of date. We'll publish the checkout price after a logged-in check.

We started from what people search for when they leave Character.AI: adult content, fewer filters, and no age-check friction. Then we kept apps that meet three tests:
- Adults-only and adult content allowed. Each app allows explicit content for adults, which Character.AI doesn't.
- A named operator. Each app names the company behind it in its terms or site footer.
- Prices or rules we could check. Each price comes from the vendor's own site, help center or blog. Where we couldn't confirm one, we mark it.

Before you switch: a checklist
- Cancel c.ai+ in the right place. On the web, it's managed from your Character.AI account settings. If you subscribed through Apple or Google, cancel there instead.[26]
- Save your character definitions. Copy the greetings and descriptions you wrote, since you'll be rebuilding characters elsewhere.
- Check how adult content is billed. OurDream and Candy AI include unlimited chat once you subscribe. Joi charges Neurons per romantic message, and DarLink's cheapest tier caps messages.
- Read the refund clause first. Windows range from 24 hours (Candy AI) to essentially none (DarLink, for the current period).
- Start monthly, then go yearly. Annual plans are much cheaper per month, but only if you stay.
