Every few weeks a new rumor goes around: Character.AI has quietly removed its NSFW filter, or the paid plan turns it off, or there's a setting nobody talks about. The searches show how much people want it to be true. "Character ai nsfw" gets about 3,600 searches a month in the US, "does character ai allow nsfw" 2,400, and "character ai nsfw filter removed" 1,600 (Semrush, October 2026).
This guide answers those questions from Character.AI's own documents, all read on October 7, 2026: its Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, help center and company blog. We quote them directly so you can check the wording yourself.
This page discusses adult content and adult-only apps. If you're under 18, the alternatives at the bottom of this page are not for you, and their terms don't allow you to use them.
No, the filter hasn't been removed, and it isn't going to be. Character.AI's Community Guidelines prohibit "pornographic content, and nudity" and say its models "are designed with filters and limits to prevent inappropriate outputs."[1] Its help center calls its stance "final" and says asking for the filter to be removed "will result in a ban."[3] Paying for c.ai+ doesn't change what Characters will say.[6]

What do Character.AI's rules actually say?
Three documents cover adult content, and they all point the same way.

The guidelines add that Character.AI's systems filter content "through both automated moderation and human review," and that users under 18 "interact with an age-appropriate model specifically designed to reduce the likelihood of exposure to sensitive or suggestive content."[1] In other words, there are at least two layers: a filter for everyone, and a stricter model for users identified as minors.
The help-center article is from 2023, but nothing Character.AI has published since contradicts it. The Terms of Service were last updated August 27, 2025, and still contain the pornography ban.[2]
Was the Character AI filter removed?
No. We searched Character.AI's blog and help center and found no announcement removing, loosening or making optional its adult-content filter. The current guidelines still describe the filter in the present tense.[1]
The rumors usually come from three places:
- Inconsistent filtering. Automated filters miss things. A message that slips through on one day isn't evidence of a policy change, and the guidelines say Character.AI may remove content and act against accounts that break the rules.[1]
- Other apps' marketing. Adult chat apps rank for "character ai nsfw" and similar searches with their own homepages. Some use "Character AI" in their pitches. They are separate companies with different rules.
- Jailbreak videos and prompts. These are user tricks, not features, and the help center's ban warning is explicit.[3]
Does c.ai+ remove the filter?
No. Character.AI's c.ai+ FAQ answers it directly: "The content outputted by Characters is currently the same between c.ai and c.ai+."[6] It also says Character.AI will keep "free and unlimited messaging for ALL users."[6]
So what does the subscription buy? Speed and extras. The US App Store lists these in-app purchases:[7]

Age checks: what "verify your age" does and doesn't unlock
Many recent searches are really about Character.AI's age checks, which arrived alongside its changes for teens. Here's the timeline from Character.AI's blog:
- October 29, 2025: Character.AI said it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18 and roll out age assurance built in-house and combined with third-party tools, including Persona.[4]
- November 21, 2025: it said removal would begin on November 24, 2025 in the US, with other markets following, and that teen chat had already been cut from two hours to one hour a day.[5]
For adults, the age-assurance help article is the one that matters. Character.AI runs age assurance on every account using "login info, activity on the platform, and some signals from third parties." If it decides you're under 18, you can use the under-18 experience or verify with a selfie checked by Persona. An ID is requested only if Persona can't confirm your age from the selfie, Character.AI says it never sees the ID, and Persona keeps IDs for one week.[8]
Passing age verification gets you back to the standard 18+ experience. The pornography and nudity ban in the guidelines applies to everyone, adults included.[1]
Bypass prompts, OOC tricks and bans
We don't publish filter workarounds, and here's why it isn't worth trying them on an account you care about:
- It breaks the terms you agreed to. The Terms of Service ban obscene or pornographic content, whatever prompt produced it.[2]
- Enforcement can go up to a permanent ban. The guidelines say Character.AI "may remove content, issue warnings, or suspend accounts," and "in serious cases" permanently ban users.[1]
- Even asking is a ban risk. The help center says requesting the filter's removal "on any of our platforms will result in a ban."[3] That covers its community spaces, not just the app.
- Modded apps are a security risk. Anything that claims to be an "unfiltered Character AI APK" isn't from Character.AI. Unofficial APKs are a common way to spread malware, and logging into one with your real account hands your password to a stranger.
What happens to your chats on Character.AI?
This is worth knowing whatever you use it for. Character.AI's help center says it retains "certain data that you share with us to help train and improve our AI models," and that user-generated content can help improve its models' creative writing. It says it reduces personal information before training.[9]
There is an opt-out, "Improve the Model for Everyone," under Settings, but the help center offers it only to users "in the European Economic Area ('EEA') or the United Kingdom ('UK')."[9] Even after opting out, Character.AI says it may still use your data for "search, recommendations, and safety classifiers."[9] If you're in the US, assume your chats can be used for training.
Where adults go instead

Before you move
- Cancel c.ai+ where you bought it. Web subscriptions are managed in Character.AI's account settings; App Store and Google Play subscriptions are cancelled in the store.[10]
- Copy your character definitions. Greetings and descriptions you wrote don't transfer automatically.
- Read the new app's refund policy. Most adult apps refund little or nothing once you've used the service.

Why does Character AI ask me to verify my age?
Since late 2025 Character.AI runs age assurance on all accounts using signals such as login info and activity. If it thinks you're under 18, you can verify with a selfie checked by Persona, and an ID only if the selfie isn't conclusive. Verifying restores the 18+ experience, which still bans adult content.
